Making 6-Figures But Still Broke? Why Income Alone Won’t Build Wealth

Your phone dings - low balance again. You’re making 6-figures, so why are you still broke?

Oh crap, you think, grabbing for your phone and going straight to your banking app. Will I have enough to cover payroll this time??

The struggle is real - people do all kinds of shenanigans to make sure there’s enough money in the account for bills. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, as they say. It’s super frustrating because you’re making enough on paper that this shouldn’t be a problem. If making 6-figures isn’t enough to cover everything, you gotta wonder how anyone is “successful.”

You keep an eagle eye on your sales dashboard and the bank account, but somehow the money always just seems to… disappear.

The stress of staying ahead of that $0.00 balance is making it hard to focus on anything else. Your doctor says you need to chill out and lose weight, your family says you shouldn’t work so hard, and your social life is nonexistent. Maybe you’ve been prescribed some antidepressants, but you know the real antidepressant would be seeing a 6-figure balance in the bank instead of just in the sales dashboard.

Because money is always so tight, you haven’t paid yourself in a couple months to get by, but now your personal finances are struggling. You wonder when that “successful lifestyle” you envisioned will get here: deep down you’re beginning to wonder if it is all an illusion after all.

The reason so many people experience this same issue is because they all have the same approach to money:

The underlying belief that the money will just work itself out as long as you’re making it.

This causes an “out-earn the expenses” strategy that keeps you in the hamster wheel of sales - not so different from the rat race you thought you escaped by becoming an entrepreneur.

The issue here stems from the fundamental way money works.

Money is a diva. Money likes tough love.

It only behaves if you pay attention to it and manage it closely.

You need money systems - both for the money to flow through and for money management.

Money is like water. It needs a solid plumbing system or else you have major leaks. When your actual plumbing leaks, the water bill is high and the repairs are expensive. Money leaks are no different.

The basic plumbing system consists of your merchant account, your bank accounts, and the automatic transfers you set up to make sure money goes where it’s supposed to. Most businesses also utilize a credit card or line of credit to extend their cashflow cycle - the key is to make sure it’s paid off every month.

Plugging the leaks is the first priority, but then we need a system to make sure the money is flowing where and when it’s supposed to. Water that doesn’t go down the right pipe makes for some cold showers.

Budgeting and accounting software will make sure that happens, as well as make sure that you know how much you’re spending on the main categories. This means you can identify areas that could be cut back a bit, as well as areas that could really benefit from a little extra wiggle room.

Money management isn’t as hard or scary as it seems. It all depends on regular maintenance. Scheduling a routine of consistent tasks for review and planning will make your finances effortless.

You’ll never have to guess how much you can afford to invest in that conference you’ve been wanting to go to, or have to borrow from yourself to make payroll.

You’ll be able to breathe again, sleep again, even eat better (and who knows, you might notice some of that extra weight just disappearing!). The ability to know at a glance exactly how much money you have to work with creates a bedrock of security that is impossible to describe.

My clients and I create that bedrock through our work together. One of my clients recently turned around being in the red every month to hitting industry average margins and actually being able to pay himself!
