Focusing so intensively on mindset like this takes effort away from your other responsibilities, so you may have missed some good opportunities, passed up a few perfect fit clients because you didn’t follow up with them in time, or disappeared off the face of the internet while you were working on yourself (which makes it hard to maintain top-of-mind presence with your audience).
I know it sounds like I’m bashing mindset work.
I PROMISE, I’m not.
I have gone through the above cycle so many times because I am so firmly convinced that mindset and beliefs are at the core of everything we do. Our actions are based on our core beliefs - and that has been proven by people much smarter and more scientific than me.
The point is that mindset work on its own doesn’t get us the results we’re looking for.
Most mindset modalities are based on Freudian and gnostic philosophies. They assume a few underlying principles that I have an objection to:
- that the first instance, or first cause, continues to be the trigger of the negative belief
- that acceptance is the cure
- that working through these things on the spiritual plane will automatically solve the issues in the physical plane
The idea is that if you can remember the first time you thought, believed, or felt a certain way about your issue, you can unlock the body’s somatic memory.
This will allow you to process that traumatic event, bring the subconscious meaning to your conscious awareness, and lovingly rewrite the belief with a more positive affirmation.
This focus also assumes that all current problems with the issue stem from the trauma locked in the body from that first initial instance, and that dealing with the initial cause will solve all subsequent instances.
The problem with this approach is that it does not take into account how memory works. For most of us, those formative experiences were so long ago we can’t actually remember them. We are remembering a memory of them, and it becomes a matrix style, endless mirror horror show of experiences triggered by memories that become memories that trigger experiences.
If you attempt to heal and rewrite every memory and every instance they triggered a negative experience, you would have to relive your life over again. I don’t know how old you are, but I don’t have time for that!
The other approach is that acceptance and forgiveness is the cure: that we should remember and face those adverse experiences and bring love and compassion to our inner child.
Forgiveness IS essential in order to release a feeling of punishment - for ourselves and for others - but retroactive forgiveness is a passive action. We are still left to deal with the consequences.
The gnosticism of mindset work seems to assume that solving issues on the spiritual level will automatically fix all manifestations of that issue on the physical.
While spiritual things - ie, beliefs and mindset - do greatly influence our actions which then affect our physical reality, strictly working on the spiritual side won’t necessarily “fix” everything on a practical level.
How many times have you worked on your mindset and been flushed with the victory of installing your new empowered beliefs only to come down hard when you realized you had no idea what to actually DO?
We need some practical, actionable, strategic TO DOs to go along with that fragile new mindset, or the stark truth of our reality will overwrite it in no time.
Our gut is a fool-proof lie detector, and it is especially good at knowing when you are lying to yourself. Oh, you can 100% lie to yourself - most of us do it quite effectively most of the time (myself included). But your body keeps the score. The more you lie, the more incongruous you feel, the more your body goes cold and quiet, the more you wonder why you still feel so petrified.
You need actual step-by-step things to do in order to change your current reality.
This is what effective coaches and courses have in common. They give you the daily tasks and SOPs to take real-world action on your goal so you have something to show yourself when your lie detector goes off.
Maybe you’re telling yourself that you have access to the abundance of the universe. When your lie detector says “yeah, right” you can show it the receipts of the actions you took. “Ok maybe I don’t have the universe on tap YET, but I did this, and this, and this, which will make it possible.”
That’s why I believe in “practical money mindset.”
Yes, you have to believe that it is possible for you to make money, that you can manage it when you get it, that you can keep making it and it won’t suddenly disappear.
But you also have to have the marketing systems in place to make sales, the financial bi-weekly, monthly, and quarterly tasks scheduled with their SOPs linked, and a backup reservoir of cash so you know you’ve got some wiggle room.
Being part of my monthly bookkeeping service gives you all the actionable, real-world tasks, strategies, and SOPs you need to make your money mindset a reality.
We don’t just talk about how you have access to the abundance of the universe: we create a system of accounts and software to capture it so when the windows of heaven open up you can collect ALL the cash.
We don’t just affirm that you are good with money: we give you the exact, step-by-step tasks you need to take in order to manage that abundance and prove to yourself once and for all that you can handle wealth.
